Sex Offenders List

So the state wants to get rid of the Sex Offender List.

Views?

On one side, some of these people have done time for their crimes and just want to move on with there lives.

On the other hand, I'm sure that there are a few that are dangerous and it would be beneficial to know if they are your next door neighbors.

This project takes over $3 million from the Texas Budget.

But is $3 million worth knowing?

What do you think? Save $3 million and people privacies OR give people the right to know!

  1. What good, exactly, is this "right to know"? What are you going to do with the information besides work yourself into a tizzy and scare your kids over a threat that's about 1,000 times less likely than drowning in the backyard swimming pool?

I doubt they'll get rid of it, but it's a thorough waste of money.

  2. Thanks for your opinion!

I really agree that it is a big waste of $3 million, but at the same time, I can see how people want to know.

I personally don't care if you flashed your you-hoo at an elderly woman and we shop at the same Wal-Mart...

    Thanks again, Gritsforbreakfast!

  3. im sure for those people who have been directly effected by these predators, recovered or not, its a very important service. not every sex offender is just flashing their pieces out on the lanes if you know what i mean. some of these fools are dangerous and NEED to be made aware of right? anyways, in response to this news the DPS Director said,
"that even if there is a reduction to the department's budget, the essential elements of the sex offender program would remain intact because of its importance to the state."

  4. Thank you for the information and your opinions!

I agree, the important ones need to be made aware of, but I understand that people can do stupid things when they are young, drunk, and possibly on drugs (I mean, hey, this is Austin) but do the ones who have paid for their crimes and changed, do they really need this constant reminder?

I just like discussions, I have no real black or white opinion, it's all gray to me!

    Again, thank you!! :)

  5. The state wants to get rid of the sex-offender's list? News to me. Where did you get that from?

The Chronicle has an article on that very subject this week, and if anything, it sounds as if the state is considering expanding the list.

  6. I saw it on the Statesmen. It was a little blip on the front page of the website for about 2 days. I don't think they really want to get rid of it, but they were talking mostly about how to cut the budget in Texas.
