Sex Offenders List

So the state wants to get rid of the Sex Offender List.

Views?

On one side, some of these people have done time for their crimes and just want to move on with there lives.

On the other hand, I'm sure that there are a few that are dangerous and it would be beneficial to know if they are your next door neighbors.

This project takes over $3 million from the Texas Budget.

But is $3 million worth knowing?

What do you think? Save $3 million and people privacies OR give people the right to know!

Hermine

Tropical Storm Hermine is causing problems for Austin.

A 19 year old girl was killed when her car became fully submerged in water.

19!!

I'm going to be 24 in less than a month but when I was 19 I was worried about boys, college classes, and whether or not I should get bangs.

My heart goes out to her friends and family, this must be a sad time for all who knew her. I can only imagine what they are going through.

To many parts of Austin are flooded and Rescuers are having a hard time rescuing, I hope Austin pulls together on this one!

My mom was right, Hermine has hit Austin, just not in the way I thought.

So maybe that's where I get my psychic abilities from because I was right too: work was slow today.

I know I'm not a thrilling or groundbreaking writer, I'm just a girl who got a degree she hasn't used and a job that isn't secure, but I've submitted a couple of articles for some blogging jobs. I want to improve my skills so that one day I can work from home and have more free time to do what I came to Austin to do.

So cross your fingers and I hope to bring you more news for Austin in the future.

By the way: I wouldn't mind some helpful critique. Obviously I didn't submit articles like this little tidbit, but I didn't think anyone would really want to read my in depth articles right now.

JTT

Ok, this has nothing to do with Austin but...

For some random reason, just now, I decided to IMDB Jonathan Taylor Thomas to see what he's been up to. I had a huge crush on him when I was little (I grew up on Home Improvement) and low and behold, today is his 29th birthday.

So the point I'm making:

Austin makes me psychic.

So, here's a psychic prediction: work is going to be slow tomorrow.

Guide to Austin

Here is a list I am compiling for those who are planning to visit Austin, currently visiting Austin, planning to move to Austin, or have just moved to Austin.

These are some helpful tips so you don't sound like a tourist!

  • The signs says "Loop 1" but we call it "MoPac"
  • The signs says "Highway 290" or "71" but we call it "Ben White"
  • The signs says "Highway 183"  but we call it "Research Blvd" or just "Research"
  • The signs says "Highway 183" but as you get close to Airport Blvd we call it "Ed Bluestein" (thank you James!)
  • The signs says "Manchaca" but we call it "Manchac"
  • When people say "ACL" 95% of the time they aren't talking about the ligament.
  • If you're running late for anything, just grumble "MoPac..."and the people from Austin will totally understand.
  • When you hear people say "SoCo" they can mean one of 2 things:
    • Southern Comfort
    • South Congress Ave.
  • When people start talking about "Leslie" this is who they are talking about:

More to come.

MoPac

This is why I don't like MoPac:

This happened this morning on Loop 1 near downtown.

...and this is why I take I-35 as much as possible.

Its raining today thanks to Hermine. Lets make some Tropical Storm Hermine shots and get drunk!
Oh wait, I can't...I have work in the morning. Have fun without me!

Rikki

Austin is beautiful!

The sky was so pretty tonight. Just gorgeous:

Please forgive the bad picture. I took it with my phone, while I was driving, leaving the Wal-Mart on Ben White.

I talked to my mom today, she said that the tropical storm in the Gulf, Hermine, might shoot up and hit Austin....yeah, my mom worries. I don't know if Hermine will, but if she does...or he does....if it hits Austin, Tropical Storm parties will sprout around like wildfire!

Tropical Storm Hermine Shot:

  • Spiced Rum
  • Root Beer
  • and a slice of lime!

I hope that works for you! Enjoy!

Rikki Tomiko Davis

Hello, my name is Rikki. I've lived in Austin for 1 year and 5 days. It can be hard moving to a city when you only know 4 people. But during this past year I have fallen in love with this city and I plan on sharing with whomever cares to read this, all the wonderful things this city has to offer.

So whether you've lived here 50 years, 1 day, or you are just visiting Austin...hopefully I can let you know about events, restaurants, hotels, bars, and shops you might like to check out.

Keep Austin Weird.

Rikki

Austin, Texas

Austin, Texas.

Located in the “heart” of Texas is its capital. Austin is home to hippies, hipsters, politicians, businessmen, students, celebrities, artists, musicians, families, and more. To really understand this unique and interesting city I should inform you of some of the amazing things I’ve discovered in my first year living in Austin, Texas.

Austin is known by many to as the live music capital. Any given day of the week you can stumble across a talented local band playing in a bar or a concert being held in any one of the many venues that are scattered across the city. Artists like the Smashing Pumpkins, the Pixies, Sara Bareilles, the Strokes, the Black Keys, Liza Minnelli, and the Gorillaz have shows and concerts schedule in the next 2 months, and that is just a few of events that are planned. Austin is usually a primary stopping ground on many artist’s touring schedules.

There is never a dull moment in this city! Every first Thursday of the month you can walk up and down South Congress Avenue and see free art shows, you can go shopping in many of the amazing vintage or thrift shops that Austin has to offer, and this town has 4 Alamo Drafthouses.

If you’ve never heard of an Alamo Drafthouse, the best way to describe it is: a movie theater/restaurant! In front of every row of seats there is a long thin table and during your movie a waiter comes in and out of the theater to bring you food and beverages (including the alcoholic kind for you over 21 movie-goers). The “Drafthouse” (as they are called by the natives)  have weekly events like free screenings, “Quote-a-longs” and pancake dinners.  After seeing a movie at an Alamo Drafthouse, you’ll never want to go to another movie theater again!

If you are a sports fan, look no further than the University of Texas. UT prides themselves in their amazing line up of sports teams. Football has a long and passionate tradition in the hearts of the people of Austin. Sitting in the stands at a Longhorn football game, you can meet some of the most amazing and loyal people who are there to support a team that has touched their lives for many years. While attending a game you can feel the excitement and get picked up in the moment (even if you know nothing about football).

Among other things, Austin has an amazing selection of restaurants. If you’re looking for a romantic dinner for two or a quick bite before work, Austin has plenty tasty choices. With an array of 24 hour eateries like Magnolia CafĂ©, Kerby Lane, and 24 Hour Diner; you know you can have a great meal any time of the day or night. A personal, local favorite of mine is Cabo Bob’s. Think of it as if Subway started selling burritos. You start off by picking your choice of tortilla, then move on to rice, beans, meats (or no meats if you are a Vegetarian), cheeses, vegetables and drink. They usually have a line that goes out the door and into the parking lot. With only one location on the corner of Ben White and Highway 35, Cabo Bob’s is a popular local gem.

So if you're looking for a place to visit or plan on moving in the future, look no further than Austin, Texas. Don't forget: "Keep Austin Weird!"
